WINKLEIGH MORRIS WHAT WE DO
We practice almost every Tuesday evening during the winter at Winkleigh Community Centre
We dance out almost every Tuesday during the Summer at our favourite pubs
We perform dances from Cotswold and Border Morris traditions and many of our own dances in both of these styles. We also perform a rapper sword dance.
We sing and play in a pub after dancing in the Summer and sometimes at our local pubs, The Kings Arms and The Seven Stars, after practice. At other times we may just decide to get together informally for a song & music session. We also have our own ceilidh band + caller (WINKEILIDH BAND) available for hire for barn dances, etc.
We visit festivals and other celebrations of dance all over the country and abroad
We take bookings for fetes, weddings, and other private functions, for which we will normally charge a fee. Acceptance of such a booking always depends on confirmed availability of sufficient dancers and musician. NB we prefer not to dance on grass, and definitely not on a rough field !
We run workshops for children in schools, cub or scout groups, activity centres etc, and for special interest adult groups. Many of our members are qualified active or retired teachers.
We give talks to W.I. and other special interest groups. This may be by one member who is on the W.I. speakers list, or together with other dancers to include a demonstration.
We donate to charity Passing the hat round is part of our tradition. What we have collected by the end of the season is used to make a donation to at least one chosen charity. In recent years the following charities have benefited from our donations: Shelter Box, Winkleigh Memory Cafe, Plough Arts Centre. Okehampton Food Bank, South West Children's Hospice, St Petrock's Homeless Centre, South West Hospice Care, Refugee Support Devon, Macmillan Nurses, Ukraine, Amigos, Devon Women's Refuge, Force Devon, Daisy Garland, Devon Air Ambulance. In Autumn 2021 we donated nearly £1000 to 5 different charities..
Above all we have a great deal of fun !
